Most PCS travel guides tell you to book the first hotel you see and call it a day.

What they skip over is the full ecosystem of military lodging options that exist specifically for families in transit — from temporary lodging facilities on base to full resort properties operated by the Armed Forces Recreation Centers. Some of these options are dramatically cheaper than civilian hotels, and some are harder to book than you’d expect. But all of them are worth knowing about before you plan your route.

On-Base Lodging: The Basics

Every military installation has some form of temporary lodging. The name varies by branch:

• Army: Temporary Lodging Facility (TLF) or Army Lodging
• Air Force: Temporary Lodging Facility (TLF) or Inns of the Air Force
• Navy/Marines: Navy Gateway Inns & Suites, Navy Lodge, or Inns of the Corps
• Coast Guard: MWR Recreational Lodging

Regardless of what it’s called, on-base lodging generally offers rates at or below the local GSA lodging per diem rate — which means your reimbursement covers it. It’s also on secure installation grounds, which matters when you’re traveling with a car packed full of everything you own.

The catch: availability is limited and priority goes to families on PCS orders, followed by TDY travelers, then space-available. During PCS season — May through August — rooms fill up fast. Book as early as possible once your travel dates are confirmed.

Temporary Lodging Expense (TLE) and On-Base Lodging

If you’re using TLE at your gaining installation, on-base lodging is typically your first call. TLE is authorized for up to 21 days for CONUS PCS moves per JTR Table 5-13, split between your losing and gaining installations. The overall daily cap is $290, covering both lodging and M&IE combined.

A few things worth knowing about TLE and on-base lodging:

• Not all on-base lodging facilities are TLE-eligible — confirm with the specific installation before you book.
• Pet-friendly rooms on base are limited and many installations have breed restrictions aligned with DoD policy. Book immediately once your dates are confirmed and always have a civilian backup.
• TLE reimbursement is a percentage of the locality lodging per diem plus M&IE — not full reimbursement of actual costs. Plan for some out-of-pocket cost depending on your household size.
• Keep in mind lodging taxes are reimbursable separately and do not count against your TLE cap.

How to Book On-Base Lodging

Each branch handles its own reservations. Contact each branch’s central line or the specific installation directly:

• Air Force Lodging: 1-888-AFLODGE (1-888-235-6343)

• Navy Lodge: 1-800-NAVY-INN (1-800-628-9466)
• Marine Corps Inns of the Corps: Book through Marine Corps Community Services
• Coast Guard: Coast Guard MWR Recreational Lodging

Policies, fees, cancellation rules, and pet policies vary by facility. Always call the specific installation rather than assuming chain-wide policies apply.

And one thing people often don’t realize: as a military member you can stay at any branch’s lodging — not just your own. So if there’s a Navy Lodge closer to your overnight stop than an Army facility, feel free to branch out (haha!) and stay with a sister service when you travel.

Armed Forces Recreation Centers (AFRC)

Armed Forces Recreation Centers are a different category of military lodging entirely. These are resort-style properties operated by the DoD in high-demand vacation destinations — not utilitarian transit lodging. Rates are based on rank and pay grade, which makes them significantly more affordable than comparable civilian properties.

AFRC properties are available to active duty, Guard and Reserve, retirees, and their families. They’re particularly valuable for families on OCONUS PCS orders traveling through or to locations near AFRC properties, and for families who want to turn proceed time into something worth remembering.

AFRC Properties Worth Knowing About

Hale Koa Hotel — Honolulu, Hawaii

Located on Waikiki Beach, the Hale Koa is one of the most sought-after military lodging properties in the world. Rates are based on rank and are a fraction of what comparable Waikiki hotels charge. If you’re PCSing to or through Hawaii, book immediately — it fills months in advance.

Shades of Green — Orlando, Florida

Located on Walt Disney World property, Shades of Green gives military families access to one of the most expensive vacation destinations in the country at dramatically reduced rates. If your PCS route takes you through central Florida — or you’re PCSing to MacDill, Patrick, or another Florida installation — this is worth a detour.

Edelweiss Lodge and Resort — Garmisch, Germany

For families PCSing to European commands, Edelweiss in the Bavarian Alps is an exceptional property. Ski-in/ski-out in winter, hiking in summer, rank-based rates year-round. If you’re heading to Germany, Italy, or Belgium, build it into your proceed time.

Dragon Hill Lodge — Seoul, South Korea

For families PCSing to Korea, Dragon Hill Lodge provides a resort-style home base near Camp Kim in Seoul. Useful for families navigating Korean pet import requirements, which are strict — having familiar military lodging available reduces stress during an already complex process.

The New Sanno — Tokyo, Japan

Operated by Naval Services Activity, The New Sanno in Tokyo provides the same home-away-from-home experience for families PCSing to Japan. Japan has some of the most complex pet import requirements in the world — start the process at least six months before your report date.

American Forces Travel

American Forces Travel is a DoD partnership with Priceline offering discounted travel options for military families — hotel bookings, rental cars, vacation packages, flights, and event tickets at negotiated military rates. Access requires confirming active duty status through a DEERS portal at login, and it’s open to all five branches.

For PCS travel, it’s most useful as a supplementary tool for booking civilian hotels along your route when on-base options aren’t available or aren’t pet-friendly. Rates are often competitive with civilian booking platforms and sometimes significantly better.

What’s Available to Whom

Military lodging eligibility varies by property, but generally follows this priority order:

• Active duty military and families on official PCS orders (highest priority)
• Active duty and families on TDY orders
• Active duty and families on space-available basis
• National Guard and Reserve members and families
• Military retirees and their families
• DoD civilians on official orders
• Widows, widowers, and dependents of retired military personnel

AFRC properties follow a similar priority structure with rank-based pricing. Always confirm eligibility and availability directly with the property.

Practical Tips for Booking Military Lodging on a PCS Route

• Book as early as possible. Peak PCS season overlaps with peak vacation season, which means popular installations and AFRC properties fill months in advance.
• Call the specific facility, not just the branch’s central reservation line. Policies, pet rules, and availability are facility-specific.
• Always have a civilian backup in mind. Military lodging is a great option when it works out — when it doesn’t, you’ll need a fallback.
• Ask specifically about pet policies. Breed restrictions, size limits, and whether cats are accepted vary by installation and sometimes by building within the same installation. If you’re PCSing with pets, pet hotel fees are reimbursable up to $550 CONUS per PCS under JTR paragraph 050107.
• For AFRC properties, book through the individual property website or reservation line — central DoD lodging systems don’t always have AFRC availability.
• Read recent reviews from other military families before you book. Facebook groups for specific installations are often the most current source of real-world intel on lodging quality.
