Main Check-In and Central Lodging
While properties are spread across different buildings, standard check-in for service members and their families is centrally managed.
Candlewood Suites (Building 2020) serves as the primary check-in location for on-post IHG stays. It features 234 full-kitchen suites, a fitness center, laundry facilities, a pool, and pet-friendly room options.

The two primary off-base communities are St. Robert and Waynesville — both immediately adjacent to the installation and well-stocked with military-familiar hotels.
St. Robert, MO
St. Robert (Main/North Gate) is the most popular choice for military families — 3-10 minutes from post, dense hotel inventory along Route 66/Business 44, Walmart, restaurants, and a military-oriented commercial strip.
Most chain hotels here know government rates and honor them consistently. It’s also where most Fort Leonard Wood families end up living off post, so staying here during your TLE period gives you a feel for the area.
Waynesville, MO
Waynesville (West Gate) is 5-15 minutes from post with a slightly more residential feel. Fewer chain hotels than St. Robert but still solid options, so it’s a good for backup when St. Robert inventory is tapped out.
One practical note: Fort Leonard Wood is genuinely remote. The nickname “Fort Lost in the Woods” exists for a reason. Hotel pricing in St. Robert and Waynesville is affordable though — you’re likely to find something at or under the $110/night lodging cap here.

Whole-House Rentals for TLE Families
VRBO inventory in the St. Robert/Waynesville area is thinner than at larger installations, but it exists and pricing is usually reasonable.
A whole-house rental in this market will almost always come in under the $110/night lodging cap at weekly rates — and the Ozarks setting means many rentals have outdoor space and yards that make three weeks feel a lot more manageable.

Location Factors You Should Consider
Ozarks terrain. The Mark Twain National Forest is essentially on post. Hiking, floating, fishing, and hunting are excellent. The Big Piney and Gasconade rivers are popular for floating. If your family does outdoor recreation, this is one of the better-located installations in the country for it.
Truly remote. If you’re coming from a metro-area installation, adjust your expectations. The closest Target is over an hour away. Rolla (about 30 minutes east on I-44) has the best retail in the region. St. Louis is about 2.5 hours east. Plan your first-week errands before you arrive so you can make time to get them all done in one trip.
I-44 corridor. Fort Leonard Wood sits right on I-44 between St. Louis and Springfield. If you’re PCSing from the east or west, this is a natural overnight stop on your drive in — and St. Robert hotel pricing makes it worth stretching your driving day to get there.

If you’re PCSing, there are two different lodging caps you need to know:
- If you’re staying near Fort Leonard Wood on the way to your next station, your lodging is capped at the CONUS standard rate, which is currently $110.
- If you’re moving to or from Fort Leonard Wood and using TLE, your lodging is based on your family size and the local per diem, up to $290.
