Camp Pendleton is the Marine Corps’ largest West Coast installation, stretching 17 miles of Southern California coastline between Oceanside and San Clemente. Whether you’re visiting for a graduation or family day, PCSing in or out, or just passing through on a road trip — here’s what you need to know about lodging near the base.
Most off-base hotels cluster in Oceanside along the N. Coast Highway and Mission Ave corridors — both within 10-15 minutes of the main gate.
The Oceanside hotel market is somewhat inconsistent, so we’ve filtered out the ones with frequent cleanliness and safety complaints. San Clemente, about 10 minutes north of the main gate on I-5, is worth checking if Oceanside is sold out — it has generally nicer inventory at similar prices.

Comfort Suites Oceanside Camp Pendleton Area
Best overall. Clean rooms, solid breakfast, friendly staff, walking distance to the beach. Consistently strong military family reviews.
Good value, ocean views, walking path to the marina and beach. Multiple reviews specifically mention visiting Camp Pendleton. Good pick for families who want beach access.
Oceanside and the surrounding South Orange County coast have strong VRBO inventory. For families spending time near the base — whether for a longer visit or PCS TLE — a whole house with beach proximity, a kitchen, and yard space is a great upgrade over a hotel room. Weekly rates in Oceanside regularly come in at or under the standard government lodging rate.
If you’re PCSing, VRBO bookings are reimbursable under TLE as long as the nightly rate is at or under the lodging cap. Keep your booking confirmation and get an itemized payment receipt to file with your voucher.
Camp Pendleton has more on-base lodging options than most installations — and some of them are definitely worth knowing about. All options are operated through MCCS Camp Pendleton, and you can book through their 24/7 reservation line at (888) 409-7829.
Inns of the Corps
Inns of the Corps runs two traditional hotel-style facilities for official travelers and PCS families on base. Both have kitchenettes, ocean views, and pet-friendly rooms available. Leisure travelers can book up to 30 days in advance for a maximum 7-night stay.
Pacific Views — Every room has an ocean view. and 4 pet-friendly rooms (2 double queen, 2 king) are available. Suites include a kitchenette with cooking and dining utensils.
Ward Lodge — 16 pet-friendly rooms across standard and kitchenette configurations. Also has a dog run, playground, laundry facility, and picnic area with BBQ grills on site.
Pet policy (both facilities): Dogs 50 lbs or under are welcome; over 50 lbs requires prior approval. Pit Bulls, Staffordshire Terriers, Wolf Hybrids, and Rottweilers not permitted per base policy. Liability waiver and shot records are required at check-in.
Check here first for any official travel. If rooms are unavailable, get a non-availability confirmation number before booking off base for official travel.
Beach Cottages
This is the part most people don’t know about. Camp Pendleton has oceanfront beach cottages available to active duty, reservists, retirees, eligible veterans, and DoD employees. Each cottage has a private bedroom, kitchenette, living area, patio, and BBQ grill. Pet-friendly cottages are available at both locations (restricted breeds apply per base policy).
Del Mar Beach & Marina — Beachfront and marina view cottages, plus 116 full hook-up RV/campsites. No dogs are allowed on the beach itself due to bird nesting restrictions, so make sure they’re on a leash at all times. You can book up to 12 months in advance. Reservations: delmarbeach@usmc-mccs.org
San Onofre Beach — Quieter, north end of the base. Cottages and campgrounds, beach access and services. Reservations: sanonofrebeach@usmc-mccs.org
Both beach locations have restrictions on who may book, how many cottages you can have under one reservation, and length of stay — especially around holidays. You can call them at (888) 409-7829 for more information.
Pet-Friendly Lodging Near Camp Pendleton
The Oceanside hotel market has limited high-quality pet-friendly options. The Comfort Suites is your best bet — call ahead to confirm current pet policies and fees before booking, as the Oceanside market is inconsistent about what’s listed online vs. enforced at check-in.
Pet hotel fees are reimbursable under JTR paragraph 050107 — up to $550 CONUS total per PCS. Keep itemized receipts showing pet fees as a separate line item.
050107. Pet Expenses Due to a PCS
A. Authority Effective January 1, 2024.
1. Eligibility. A Service member or Service member’s dependent on a PCS order with an effective date of January 1, 2024 or later may be authorized reimbursement for the costs related to the relocation of one household pet that arises from a permanent change of station. A household pet is a cat or a dog, owned for personal companionship.
2. CONUS. A Service member or Service member’s dependent may be authorized the reasonable and substantiated cost of mandatory microchipping, boarding fees, hotel service charges, licensing fees at the new PDS, and pet shipping fees if the member flies rather than drives, or the pet is shipped separately from the member. Reimbursement for the actual cost of all expenses is limited to $550 per PCS move.
3. OCONUS. Reimbursement for the actual cost of all necessary expenses is limited to $2,000 per PCS move.
Camp Pendleton Location Factors You Should Consider
The base is massive. Camp Pendleton covers over 125,000 acres. Your unit’s location on base matters — the main gate on Vandegrift Blvd (I-5 Exit 54) is closest to Oceanside hotels, but some units are significantly further inland. Confirm your unit’s closest gate before you book to avoid a long commute.
San Clemente is worth considering. About 10 minutes north of the main gate on I-5, San Clemente has nicer hotels, better restaurants, and a more pleasant beach town feel than Oceanside. Rates are comparable and commute time is minimal.

Holiday Inn Express San Clemente North
Clean, has a pool and hot breakfast. Right off I-5 and easy commute to the main gate.
Southern California cost of living. The Oceanside/San Clemente market is expensive — housing, food, and activities all run higher than national averages. Plan accordingly if you’re PCSing here from a lower cost-of-living installation.
The beach. Camp Pendleton has some of the last undeveloped coastline in Southern California. If you have base access, Del Mar Beach and San Onofre are genuinely worth visiting — especially after a stressful PCS.
