Joint Base Lewis-McChord is one of the largest military installations on the West Coast — home to I Corps, the 2nd Infantry Division, and the 62nd Airlift Wing, among others. It’s a major PCS hub for both Army and Air Force families.
If you have orders to JBLM, here’s what you need to know about lodging during your move.
TLE Quick Facts
TLE Quick Facts — JBLM
Authorized TLE days: Up to 21 days CONUS (JTR Table 5-13)
Daily TLE cap: Up to $290/day
Standard PCS lodging cap: $110/night
Pet reimbursement: Up to $550 CONUS (JTR 050107)
The exact amount you receive depends on your household size — the calculation is a percentage of the applicable locality lodging and M&IE rates. The key booking decision is whether a hotel or rental comes in at or under the $110/night lodging rate.
On-Base Lodging
JBLM has two on-base lodging facilities — one on the Lewis side and one on the McChord side — both operated through their respective programs.
- McChord Inn (Air Force side): (253) 982-2940
- Lewis Main Lodge (Army side): (253) 967-5511
- Pet policy: Limited pet-friendly rooms on both sides — confirm when booking
JBLM is one of the largest installations on the West Coast and a major PCS hub. On-base lodging books out well in advance during summer, so call early. Call both facilities — either is open to you regardless of branch, and availability varies between them.
Off-Base Hotels Near JBLM
The two main off-base communities for JBLM families are Lakewood and Tacoma, both within 10-20 minutes of the main gates.
Lakewood, WA
Lakewood is directly adjacent to the Lewis side and the most popular choice for military families. There’s dense hotel inventory along Bridgeport Way and Pacific Highway SW, with options ranging from budget to mid-range. Most chains here are well-acquainted with military travelers and government rates.
Tacoma, WA
Tacoma is about 15 minutes north on I-5 with even more hotel inventory — which is useful if Lakewood is sold out. The South Tacoma/Pacific Ave corridor has the most options at or near the government lodging cap.
Note: the I-5 corridor between Lakewood and JBLM is one of the most congested stretches in Washington during commute hours. Plan accordingly.
Whole-House Rentals for TLE Families
The South Sound area — Lakewood, Spanaway, Puyallup — has solid VRBO inventory year-round. It’s possible to find weekly rates in Lakewood and Spanaway that come in at or under the $110/night lodging cap. For families moving with kids or pets, the space, kitchen, and yard are worth it over three weeks in a hotel room.
VRBO bookings are reimbursable under TLE as long as the nightly rate is at or under the lodging cap. Keep your booking confirmation and get an itemized payment receipt.

Pet-Friendly Lodging Near JBLM
Lakewood and Tacoma both have solid pet-friendly hotel options. La Quinta on Bridgeport Way in Lakewood is a reliable choice — no breed restrictions, and walking distance to restaurants. Drury Inn and Red Roof Inn are also in the corridor.
The South Sound outdoor culture means pets are generally well-accommodated in this area, so you should be able to find pet-friendly accomodations. Still call ahead to confirm current policies and fees.
Pet hotel fees are reimbursable under JTR paragraph 050107 — up to $550 CONUS total per PCS. Keep itemized receipts showing pet fees as a separate line item for filing your voucher.

Location Factors You Should Consider
Weather. The South Sound gets significant rainfall October through May. If you’re PCSing in the off-season, pack accordingly. Grey skies for weeks at a time is normal — and rain showers can be unpredictable.
Seattle proximity. Seattle is about 45 minutes north on I-5 in light traffic — considerably longer during commute hours. A major city is accessible on weekends, which matters for quality of life.
I-5 traffic. The corridor between Lakewood and JBLM, and especially the Port of Tacoma interchange, can be brutal during peak hours. If you’re staying in Tacoma and commuting to in-processing, plan your departure times accordingly.
Mount Rainier. Visible from much of the South Sound on clear days. Worth mentioning only because if you’re coming from a flat-state installation, the first time you see it is genuinely breathtaking. If you hear locals say “the mountain is out,” they’re talking about Rainier.
Know Your Entitlements Before You Book
If you’re PCSing, there are two different lodging caps you need to know:
- If you’re staying near JBLM on the way to your next station, your lodging is capped at the CONUS standard rate, which is currently $110.
- If you’re moving to or from JBLM and using TLE, your lodging is based on your family size and the local per diem, up to $290.
They’re two different entitlements, and while you shouldn’t be paying out of pocket for either one if you plan accordingly, knowing which one applies is important.
